Finding a grave

The online deceased-person search is currently being revised. For a grave location, email friedhoefe@charlottenburg-wilmersdorf.de with the deceased person’s name and any known life or burial dates. After the resting period or plot rights expire, an administrative search incurs a charge even if it is unsuccessful.

Cemetery administration and contact

Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf cemetery administration, based at Wilmersdorf Cemetery, Kalischer Straße 7, 10713 Berlin.

Grave types and allocation

Selected coffin plots, selected urn plots and communal urn plots. Also a trust-funded maintained burial community.

Allocation of grave rights

Plot rights are normally acquired for 20 years. Selected and family plots may be extended; row and communal plots cannot be extended. Arrange the particular plot type and available space with the responsible administration.

Costs and cemetery fees

Calculated examples under the 2026 tariff for a new plot and one interment without a ceremony: selected coffin plot €857, selected urn plot €669, anonymous communal urn plot €704. They include the €52 administration charge, basic cemetery fee and interment; provision and maintenance are also included where required for that plot type. If the cemetery cannot store a coffin, the coffin-interment charge is reduced by €15. A ceremony of up to 30 minutes normally adds €159. Special burial and care arrangements have additional costs according to the chosen scheme. Memorials, additional services, cremation and funeral-director costs are excluded. New charges take effect on 1 January 2027; the tariff in force when the application is received determines the charge.

Funeral dates and ceremonies

Wednesday appointments hourly from 09:00: urn interments until 14:00, coffin burials until 13:00.

Funeral hall and chapel

The funeral hall offers 70 seats, an electronic organ and a music system.

Grave care and local services

For a selected plot, clarify individual care arrangements when the plot is allocated. Where communal graves are offered, maintenance of the shared green area is part of that arrangement.

History and distinctive features

Grunewald Cemetery opened in 1892 between railway lines in Halensee. Its isolated setting gave rise to the nickname Toteninsel, or “island of the dead”. An oak avenue leads to the neo-Gothic chapel built in 1897.
